Internet Child Protection

With the Internet ruling our lives the way it does these days, it is impossible not to give Internet access to our children. The Internet helps them immensely and plays a big part in their upbringing. However, we all know about the darker side of the Internet that is infested with porn websites and pedophiles. As sensible parents, Internet child protection is something that we must consider when we give Internet access to our children.

Policing our children’s Internet browsing activity is not possible. Most of the parents of today have their work outside the home and the children get to spend a lot of time on their own. If internet access is not given to our children, it will heighten their curiosity. They will start thinking that there is something inside the computer because of which they are not given access. They will look at alternative steps to access the Internet. A better option is to give them Internet access but to monitor it using some kind of internet child protection plan.

URL filtering is one of the most effective ways of blocking certain websites. When a URL filter is installed in the computer, it scans the URLs of the websites that our children try to open. If there is any word or phrase in a particular URL that is deemed unsuitable then it is blocked by the filter and our children cannot open the websites.

URL filters are sophisticated tools that even work within websites. Some of us may know that a webpage is sometimes comprises of individual pages that are sealed together to form a single webpage. There may be some websites whose URL is deemed suitable as per the URL filter. But there may be one URL within the webpage that is deemed unsuitable. The filter will then block this section of the website. It is a very effective way to ensure that our children don’t stumble upon porn websites and other unwanted content.

URL filters also work in web based email programs. They block links that are deemed spam. This not only protects our children but our computers too. Some emails may contain links that are actually malwares or viruses or point to hacking websites. Opening these links may destroy the hard disk of the computer. A URL filter will stop these links.

Besides URL filtering, there are many other ways to protect our children from the ill effects of the Internet. There are various Internet child protection software programs that ensure that our children use the Internet for their own benefit and see it as a learning tool. The Internet, when used properly, is a fantastic resource that can create geniuses out of our children. And this is what Internet protection is all about.
